Built According to Vedic Architecture
Healthy, Fortune-Creating Buildings

Vastu Directions

Vedic Architecture (Vastu Vidya® of Maharishi Sthapatya Veda®) follows the building principles that are in harmony with Natural Law — these principles are in line with Nature’s own timeless laws of structuring or building which maintain every particle in creation in perfect harmony with everything else. Thus, Maharishi Sthapatya Veda design is the world’s most ancient and complete system of architecture and planning. It takes into account the influences of sun, moon, stars and planets with reference to north and south poles and the equator. Homes, offices and communities designed and built according to Maharishi Sthapatya Veda design therefore connect individual life with Cosmic Life, individual intelligence with Cosmic Intelligence, optimizing both the close and distant positive environmental influences on the individual.

This knowledge of construction, according to Natural Law, has been recently brought to light from the Vedic Tradition — the eternal tradition of Natural Law — by His Holiness Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.

Maharishi is the world’s foremost scientist of consciousness. He is honored throughout the world for reformulating the ancient Vedic wisdom — including Maharishi Sthapatya Veda — in a systematic, scientific framework, which has brought the benefits of the Vedic knowledge and Vedic technologies of consciousness to millions of people throughout the world.

“Because the individual is cosmic, everything about individual life should be in full harmony with Cosmic Life. Maharishi Sthapatya Veda gives dimensions, formulas, and orientations to the buildings that will provide Cosmic Harmony and Support to the individual for his peace, prosperity, and good health — daily life in accord with Natural Law, daily life in the evolutionary direction.” —Maharishi

Maharishi Sthapatya Veda design has three main principles:

  • Right Direction
  • Right Placement
  • Right Proportions
Vastu Directions

Right Direction — the strongest influence of Natural Law comes from the sun. On its path from east to west, from sunrise to sunset, the sun generates different qualities of energy.

This is why Maharishi Sthapatya Veda design says the entrance to the building should face east—because the energy from the sun is the greatest when rising. This brings the greatest benefits of health and vitality to the occupants.

So we can see from this diagram, that of the eight possible directions, only two – east and north — produce auspicious influences. This means that in an average city with roads in all directions producing all possible orientations of building, at least 75% of all buildings have inauspicious orientation, contributing to ill health and other problems in society. Maharishi adds to this point by saying, “People do not generally know that the orientation of residential and office buildings contributes a great deal to success and progress in professional life, and health, happiness, and fortune on the individual level.”

The next main principle of Maharishi Sthapatya Veda design is Right Placement — there is an ideal place for every activity in the house. Ancient mathematical formulas of Vedic Architecture take into account the influence of sun, moon, and planets, as well as harmonious cosmic proportions.

Sun Influence

The sun generates different qualities of energy as it moves from east to west in the sky. Therefore each room should be placed so that the activities in that room correspond to the different energies of the sun. Then Natural Law will support every aspect of daily activity.

The third main principle of Maharishi Sthapatya Veda is Right Proportion. Every room in the house or office should be properly proportioned according to its function to provide maximum support. Maharishi Sthapatya Veda design takes advantage of the cosmic proportions with reference to the individual proportions of the human physiology to bring balance to the occupants.

Buildings that do not follow these important principles can cause:

  • anxiety, depression
  • illness, chronic disease
  • blocks to creativity
  • bad luck, financial loss
  • obstacles to progress and success
  • disharmony in relationships, breakdown of family
  • anti-social behavior and even criminal tendencies

Maharishi Sthapatya Veda architecture involves a number of other key elements in the design of a building or a community. All these valuable elements, which comprise building in accord with Natural Law, are contained in the new buildings on the Maharishi Academy of Total Knowledge campus.
